What is steamworks?

- Steamworks is p2p system which connect players via matchmaking. It also includes achievements, anti-cheat technology, in-game enocomy systems with microtransations.

- Spacewar is a sample game to demonstrate SteamWorks API to developers.

- Steamworks is used for most Steam games, so many games nowadays uses steamworks. Luckily for us pirates we can 'fix' steamworks for cracked games (read 'What are steamworks fixes').

- The Steamworks SDK (for developers/crackers) can be found here:

Steamworks

- More information about steamworks can be found here:

http://www.steampowered.com/steamworks/

What are steamworks fixes?

- A steamworks fix, does what it's called: it 'fixes' steamworks for cracked games. This way steamworks is available for cracked games.

- The Steam Client is required for all steamworks fixes. This is obvious. Steamworks won't work without Steam.

- Every game has appid number. But if do not own this game, you can't play with her appid online, because is not subscribed and Steam can see that.

- If you use steamworks fix with appid which is subscribed to everyone (free) you can play multiplayer in cracked games with other people which are using the exact same appid.

- These 'free' appids are limited, so we try to hide them as much as we can, so they don't get busted very fast.

How to use steamworks fixes?

1. Download the game you want to play

2. Install game (do not apply crack)

3. Install any available updates (do not apply crack)

4. Download the latest SteamWorks fix and copy all contents to game folder.

5. Read NFO included with SteamWorks fix for instructions on how to play.

Enjoy!

According to you, there is very limited amount of free steam appids which can be used for making steamworks fixes. [I can see that you are only using only one appid]. So can't steam detect that these steamworks fixes are being made and take the appid down? Have they already done that to some appids?
I was looking into your work and I am curious about this.If you kindly reply that would be nice.

Can you elaborate the process of making these fixes further? If its a secret then maybe you can give the general idea, so that I (or some wannabe hackers like me) start learning. I know it's annoying, but it would be really helpful. I mean, you moderators also learned it from somewhere. If you don't want this discussion, maybe you can just give link to another site/forum where this type of discussions are done.

Thanks in advance!

Why aren't there Steamworks fix for some of the other big games like Call of Duty, Dead Space, Medal of Honor, etc?

Because those games do not use steam (steamworks) as their multiplayer platform.

Well, what exactly is Steamworks then?

And if I am not wrong, the Call of Duty franchise rather uses IWNet as their platform, isn't it? (You just confused me as to the word "platform")

Steamworks is used by quite a few steam games. It is basically games that use steam's servers for multiplayer connectivity instead of their own servers. It allows smaller games to have multiplayer without them having to create and code their own servers for the games.

Why do you use 'her'? I've also seen some others do it. :) Not complaining or anything :p Just curious. Isn't 'it' sufficient?

I thought that Steamworks uses a p2p system, that's why it's relatively easy to bypass the protection. And the other big games (like the ones t0rch mentioned) uses a server system, where a player must be connected to a server to access Multiplayer. To crack multiplayer in those games, someone has to emulate a whole server (and let other pirates join it). Correct me if I'm wrong.

I think only some games use P2P system in steamworks. it depends on the kind of game, for games with large numbers of users in a game, i don't think a P2P system is very reliable or ideal.

The point that I was making, was that you need to own a game on steam to use it's AppID.

I have purchased many games on my Steam account, and I was wondering if these Steamworks fixes are detectable, bannable or punishable by Steam staff (specifically the Spacewar mimic fix for Gauntlet). It would be terrible to lose access to my account or anything. Thanks!

I'm sure it's detectable and bannable/punishable, but nobody ever was banned for using a steamworks fix.

In common sense terms here, if you are in doubt whether or not your legit account may get banned or whatever then just make a dummy for the cracked games you wish to play, it will put your mind at ease.
